The wisdom of discipline

Proverbs 3:11-12 “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves as a father the son he delights in.” Without discipline only chaos is the result.  God is not talking about brutality or any kind of cruelness.  Love always dominates.  A child loves order and stability, as do you and I.  Discipline without loving concern is not God’s discipline as it should not be yours or mine.  Correction, guidance, and instruction all lead to stability and success in life.  Why would we want anything less?

Give and be blessed

Proverbs 3:9-10 “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” Many of us think the more we hoard the more we gain; whereas just the opposite is true.  Generosity and blessing are twins.  When one is generous blessing follows.  When blessing happens generosity follows.  Follow your God nature and your life will thrive; follow your human nature and you will struggle.

Everything

Proverbs 3:6 “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Troubles in the world, in our own country, within our communities and even within ourselves in our private lives dominate life.  Should we shrug our shoulders and conclude—oh well, that’s the way it is, that is the way it always has been and that is what the future will be.  OR, should we carefully look at this passage and put God in the forefront of all we do and let Him guide our paths?  We, our communities, our country and the world would be a different place.  We can try and effect the world, but at the least we can effect ourselves and ripples will occur.

Familiar verse

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” What a simple sentence.  The depth of this simple sentence is the foundation of our faith.  That thought changes this simple sentence into one of the most important statements of faith in all of Scripture.  If we truly believe the thought expressed in this simple sentence we have found the peace which passes all understanding.  Pray for such a faith! Have a great weekend.

Proverbs 3:3-4 “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.  Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.” Love and faithfulness are traits which define children of God.  Our Heavenly Father defines both.  He is love and His promises are absolute.  You and I are heirs of both His love and faithfulness.  We are also students of our Heavenly Father, learning from Him the most beneficial traits defined as success.  LOVE and FAITHFULNESS—-THAT IS YOUR NAME!
