Proverbs 19:22a “What a man desires is unfailing love…” Have you ever heard anyone say—I don’t want to be loved now or ever! No one has ever said that. Why? We all want to have value and with any value comes love. The ultimate value and love any of us experience is that which we receive from our Heavenly Father. He has given us value, purpose and eternal love. How could any of us not fall in love with Him?

Proverbs 19:21 “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Many live with the thought–I determine what and when and where I live, I am going to live and do it my way. That thinking leads to a purposeless and wasted life. Instead, you and I should be asking–Dear Heavenly Father, let me accomplish the purpose You have for me. Guide me and let me serve you in accomplishing your purpose with my life. Then our lives become purposeful, contented and successful.

Proverbs 19:17 “He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done.” Helping others is a common trait of every true Christian. A Christian does not live life for his own pleasure, but rather has learned that helping others is not only his responsibility but his joy. And where is this trait seen and taught? Proverbs 18:24 “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Often popularity is envied. Or is having a good close friend that can be trusted, is loyal and can be confided in of more value than many admirers? Solomon is suggesting that one can be a much greater number than many and one can have much more depth than a shallow crowd.

Proverbs 18:15 “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.” A person who has a desire to gain both knowledge and wisdom will continually have a mindset to gain both. His/her direction will always be focused on an improved and strengthened way of both thinking and living. This will in turn lead to teaching the same quality of life.

Proverbs 18:13 “He who answers before listening—-that is his folly and his shame.” Our wise God knew He could not create man with 2 mouths and 1 ear. If He had, man would talk constantly and listen rarely. He knew that for man to gain and display wisdom, he must listen much more than he talks. This is an important lesson for us to apply.

Proverbs 18:12 “Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.” Education, income, position or popularity can be the worst thing a person can attain. These qualities can also be the best things a person can attain. What makes the difference? Humility! The best is to always recognize being a child of God is the greatest honor a person will ever achieve.

Proverbs 18:10 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” The security found through a strong faith and unquestioning loyalty to our Heavenly Father is the most valuable treasure a person can own. Proverbs 17:28 “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” We don’t usually associate wisdom with silence, but we do often associate foolish thinking with conversation. Often a look expresses more than words and silence can easily influence and discipline. I wonder how many of us as parents have accomplished much in a very loving way with a look and a silence and the amazing thing is–both love and excellent results were accomplished.

Proverbs 17:27 “A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered.” Words can display both thought and thoughtlessness. Knowing this thought should generate a careful choice of when to use wise words and when to remain silent. To speak just to hear sound is both foolish and can be very detrimental. God gives us the ability to speak, and we should use that ability wisely and to His honor.

Proverbs 17:24 “A discerning man keeps wisdom in view, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.” There is never a time in life when wisdom can be discarded. There is never a time in life when one can hide from God and think he is out of sight of our Almighty God. Why would a person ever want to walk this earth without their Heavenly Father at their side?
